HOSPITALITY INITIATIVE LAUNCHES AMERICAN HOTEL & LODGING
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE CURRICULUM - START AT NORLAND SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL
Black Hospitality
Initiative (BHI), through its Talent Development program, launched the
American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute Curriculum-START
(Skills, Tasks, and Results Training) at Norland Senior High Academy of
Hospitality School on Thursday, March 1, 2012. Participating
students at Norland will undergo 180 hours of training and on-the-job
hospitality work experience. BHI will also provide START
resource support to the Academy of Hospitality Schools of Booker
T. Washington Senior High and Northwestern Senior High.
START is a
hospitality training curriculum written by the American Hotel & Lodging
Educational Institute, and is part of a funded grant called Project
TEED (Tourism Employment Education Development) made available by the
Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation. Project TEED is a
hospitality work preparedness program for high-school students in
grades 10, 11 and 12. The goal of Project TEED is to increase the
number of skilled and knowledgeable young people recruited, trained,
educated and prepared to work in the local tourism and hospitality
industry.

FLORIDA HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AS "OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY
LEADER"
Graylyn
Swilley-Woods, Executive Director of the Black Hospitality
Initiative of Greater Miami (BHI), was recognized as an
Outstanding Community Leader at the South Florida Hispanic Chamber
of Commerce's Black History Month Celebration at the
Hilton Bentley Hotel on February 23, 2012. Having spent
more than 20 years in education, Ms. Swilley-Woods has developed
educational programs that received both state and national
recognition.
The
Outstanding Community Leader Award is presented annually by the
South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to African Americans who
have made significant contributions to our community and who have
excelled in their respective careers.
